LOVECRAFT doc@ComiCon 2008

Greetings all . Just wanted to drop a heads up to any of y'all in the San Diego area. It's been a long road, but the documentary film "LOVECRAFT: Fear Of The Unknown" is complete and will premiere at ComiCon 2008 in San Diego on July 24th, 8:00pm.

As a lifelong fan of HPL, creating the music for this project has been a dream realized for me.
I have been invited (along with the production team) to attend the event, and to do a Q & A after the film's screening. It's very exciting to think of how many people will be there, as over 120,000 people attend ComiCon each year. (no pressure.....)

The film features educated insight into the man and his legacy from :

John Carpenter (director - Halloween, The Thing)
Neil Gaiman (author - Fragile Things, American Gods)
Guillermo Del Toro (director - Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy)
Ramsey Campbell (author - Inhabitant of the Lake, Darkest Part of the Woods)
Stuart Gordon (director - Re-Animator, From Beyond)
S.T. Joshi (author/biographer - H.P. Lovecraft: A Life, The Angry Right)
Caitlin R. Kiernan (author - Daughter Of Hounds, Silk)
Andrew Migliore (founder - H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival)
Robert Price (author / editor - Crypt of Cthulhu, The Da Vinci Fraud )
Peter Straub (author - Ghost Story, Lost Boy Lost Girl)

The documentary also features creature art from some of the top Lovecraftian artists including Tom Sullivan (artist, "The Evil Dead" and "Call Of Cthulhu" role playing game).

Hope to see any friendly faces there-
IA!

I was wondering how everyone else here feels about the re-make of House of Wax... I love the original one with Vincent Price, he was so wonderfully creepy...Although, it was a bit interesting seeing Paris Hilton get a pole through her head..Any thoughts??

Just saw this. It's excellent and campy at the same time--way better than I expected.

Lugosi is deliciously evil. The silent movie/German Expressionist stylings are creepy and effective. There's some amazingly good cinematography here, and the racist elements waver between amusing, kind of interesting, and titillatingly offensive. There's also a nice pre-Hayes moment of skimpy clothing.

It's an old black & white movie about these huge black rocks that are infecting people in this town & spreading more big black rocks... and the only thing that stops them is salt (or salt water). I saw it about a million years ago & I thought it was called Monolith, or Monoliths (but the only thing I find is an 80s Bill Paxton movie).

Does anyone know this movie?

Zombies anyone? SF

I got a free pass for 2 for a premier for Fido.. Of course you've got to wait in line forever, but it looks like a fun film. None of my friends are available tomorrow, Anyone game? The movie starts at 7:30, I'd like to get there at around 6:30.

Director/co-writer Andrew Currie's delirious black comedy sends up melodrama, social satire, zombie, and boy-and-his-dog films, all within a 1950s-style Technicolor world! Years ago the dead started rising with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Terror spread, until a collar was invented that made the zombies docile, even useful. After Mom (Carrie-Anne Moss) buys a zombie (Billy Connolly) to help around the house, young Timmy (K'Sun Ray) forms a true friendship with him, naming the zombie "Fido." But Fido's collar goes on the fritz, and the neighbors start paying the ultimate price. Co-starring Henry Czerny, Dylan Baker and Tim Blake Nelson.

Caution: SPOILER. Several years ago, I watched what seemed to be a fairly pedestrian late-night vampire movie on the tube. But there was a surprise ending. The leader of the local village vigilantes had a few moments alone with the vampire, just before killing him.

After telling the vampire that he had been terrorizing the village far too long, the 'hero' revealed that he was a werewolf, and that he wanted all of the villagers for himself! Does anyone remember the name of the movie, or who was in it? Thanks.

A CGI suggestion

There's been lots of talk recently about the CGI-updates Paramount has made to the original "Star Trek" series - replacing all the original effects with new ones. Personally I'm against this for many reasons that I won't get into now. However, I was thinking that there are a couple sci-fi films from the 50's & 60's that have been singled out for their incredibly bad effects that could use an upgrade - "Reptilicus" and "The Giant Claw". These two films are generally found on the 'worst of' lists, but only because their effects are so ridiculously inept and not necessarily because the stories themselves were bad (at least not as bad as a giant-monster film usually is). I'm not suggesting pretending the original films cease to exist, but a neat DVD would be to show the original films, then as a bonus have a version with more effective effects, done in the style of what would have been done at the time. I know no company is going to shell out the money for this, but it might make for an interesting curiosity.

Equinox - just released.

I saw this movie when I was a kid and I just got it from Netflix. I really love this movie. They use the stop motion animation for several of the monsters and the storyline is a precurser to the "Evil Dead" movies. Kids in the woods find a book, chaos ensues. I remember it giving me nightmares as a child and while it doesn't scare me the same way now, it still creeps me out.

When I saw it, it was on a double bill with some movie about a kid with a golden fiddle, or banjo that was used to ward off monsters on his trek. Possibly "Billy and the Golden Fiddle (Banjo)"?

If you saw the Golden Fiddle (Banjo) movie, please let me know the title and if it's available anywhere.

If you saw "Equinox", what did you think of it?

Nudity in The Black Cat (1934)?

Hello everyone. I'm new to Tribe, looking for people who share my interests, particularly NYC people.

I think I've spotted some partial nudity in THE BLACK CAT. As Peter and Joan run out of the room, leaving the dying Bela and Boris to blow up, part of her cult robe is caught and pulled away, briefly revealing her nude or barely covered rear for a couple frames. Am I the first one to notice this? Still framing on the new DVD seems to reveal it pretty clearly.

Anyone else ever get bothered by this film??

When I was like 9 I saw it and it bugged the shit out of me for years. I kept telling people about it and no one knew what i was talking about.

It's the one with Hope Lange where she and her hubby move to an old MASS, town and the towns people all get weird and bother her.. Truns out they are all reincarnations of the witchs she helped accuse in past life..

Things really creepy was like her dreams of being pressed beneath stones and such.

What really bothered me was the spooky girl about 13 who seduces Hopes hubby. Back then as a kid a 13 year old talking about how he's her man now, threatening to kill his wife and making sexual advances on him creeped me out totally.

Sheesh Now its normal news media.. hehehe

I just watched the orig "House on Haunted Hill" and "The Last Man on Earth" (I think that's the title?) with Vincent Price. He totally rocks! He makes B-movies into masterpieces!
SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE – Lost Classic Stunningly Restored
(1973) “Victor Erice’s masterwork –now screened for the first time in 25 years---is set in the days of the dictatorship in Spain, and it’s a beautiful and disturbing movie of remote landscapes, dreamy scenes of childhood and the advancing shadow of the state. A young girl, Ana, lives with an older sister and their distracted parents. He father tends to a beehive, her mother corresponds with a lover. It is Ana’s 2 major discoveries, one, the Frankenstein movie by James Whale, and then an injured soldier in hiding, that shape the heart of this extraordinary movie. Shot in deceptively serene tones, paced in the rhythms of rural isolation, it exemplifies what Erice calls poetic cinema. It is the poetry an artist finds in the weave of dangerous times.” Don DeLillo, Telluride Film Festival 2005 In Spanish w/ English subtitles 95 min (1:00), 3:00, 5:00,7:00, 9:00

"The Legend Of Hell House" (1973)

Four people are hired by a dying millionaire to investigate the possibility of life after death. He offers them one hundred thousand pounds to stay in Belasco Mansion and assess its powerful paranormal phenomena. Twenty years before, a similar investigation ended in disaster, and Benjamin Fischer was the only one to survive and regain his sanity.

Physicist Dr. Lionel Barrett (Clive Revill) leads the group, which includes his wife (Gayle Hunnicut) and two mediums: Florence Tanner (Pamela Franklin) and Fischer (Roddy McDowell). Franklin's impulsive character soon makes contact with what she believes to be a tormented soul. Dr. Barrett is very sceptical and suspicious of the young Tanner, a mistake which he later discovers to his great cost. For much of the film, Fischer shuts himself off completely, still fearful of the house's power to destroy those it sees as its opponents. However, the horrifying events force him to open his mind again, and draw on all his psychic strength to solve "The Legend of Hell House".

When I first saw this film as a teenager, it scared the living daylights out of me. Overall, the plot sounds similar to that of "The Haunting" (1963); but it is the particular ways in which the investigators are tested, the almost constant theme of repression, and the extreme camera positions and very wide angled lenses that makes the film so intense. And all the time, we are aware of the gruesome fate of the previous team. Roddy McDowall and Pamela Franklin are excellent, and the possession scenes truly chilling. I've seen it four times now, but it still has the power to scare me! The music accompanying the car on its fog-bound journey to pick up the team sets the chilling atmosphere right from the start.

Richard Matheson adapted the script of his novel "Hell House" for the film. Stephen King has commented: "Hell House is the scariest haunted house novel ever written. It looms over the rest like the way the mountains looms over the foothills." Hell House also inspired the explanation for the power of the house in King’s powerful TV film "Salem's Lot" (1979).

I got this for Christmas and it's wonderful :) The prints of "Brides of Dracula" and "Curse of the Werewolf" are crisp, almost new-looking...and there's even a couple of black-and-white obscurities("Paranoiac", "Nightmare") that I've never seen before. If Hammer horror is your thang, you shouldn't be without this set!

In the 70's perhaps early 80's there was a horror movie that i thought was called "house" ... it was about a family who went to take care of a house ...there were many scenes involving the house rejuvinating itself, the shingles replacing themselves with new ones, the rotten rose garden coming to life, the pool making a man go crazy when he found a set of eyeglasses in it and put them on, he began to drown his son while playing with him...i have been on the search for this for some time. Can anyone help? Thank you

Here's one for you horror buffs. Remember a movie in the 70's about some guy who's brother fell down into a drainage ditch. I can't remember what the story line was, but there was a man in a wheel chair, and some guy who's name was George. I remember one of the guys in the movie who said, "Damn George!". But it was about vampires- not Salem's Lot. This came out long before that. Do these images ring a bell with anyone? Sorry for the vagueness, but this is another piece of the puzzle to my childhood memories that I would like to make sense of.

Matheson adaptations

Most people have probably seen the two loose adaptations of Matheson's "I am Legend" story, Omega Man with Charelton Heston and Vincent Price's The Last Man on Earth.

Now apparently they're making a more faithful adaptation of Matheson's story...

Lawrence Takes On Legend
Warner Brothers has set Francis Lawrence (Constantine) to direct I Am Legend, fast-tracking the long-gestating adaptation of the Richard Matheson SF novel, Variety reported. David Heyman, Akiva Goldsman, Neal Moritz and Erwin Stoff are producing. Mark Protosevich wrote the script.

Lawrence takes on one of the more ambitious films in arner's
repertoire, the trade paper reported. Legend is a big SF project that has been at the studio for nearly a decade. At one time, it had Ridley Scott and Arnold Schwarzenegger attached, and another incarnation had Michael Bay and Will Smith set.

Set in Los Angeles after a biological war, the film centers on the sole healthy survivor, a man who finds himself in a battle against nocturnal mutants. The script will undergo a rewrite under the supervision of Lawrence and the producers, who eye a 2006 start date.

I'm kind of looking forward to this "remake," but at the same time I think Hollywood's current remake frenzy is depressing. I wish they'd get a new idea and run with it instead of running old ideas into the ground. That said, I love Vincent Price's version of the story more than Heston's, but I'd buy a DVD collection that featured all three, just for the sake of having a complete collection.

I really do wish that when they did make a remake of some earlier movie, that they would come out with a collection featuring all the version, instead of casting the older one aside.

I found this article of Ebert's interesting, especially how he paints the film as a "real" threat to children.

What time period would you say the term classic horror should no longer apply?

Truly, though it turned into the decade of the slasher film (my favorite in the horror genre), horror for the most part seemed to be on a study decline from the late 80's until now?

So...just how old does a film have to be before it can have the title of 'classic.' For example it would be hard to say that "Gingersnaps" (though I loved the movie) is anywhere near classic status yet?

Are there any "Horror" fans out there? I taped it the other night, but haven't watched it yet; it's the only Hammer Frankenstein film I've never seen. Ralph Bates is all right(I've seen him in a couple of other movies), but I know I'm going to miss Peter Cushing's presence.

Possible Karloff film, or not...

Okay, it's great finding people that have seen some of the more obscure films and helping me put a title to them so I can watch for them or find them, and so I have another one. It will probably be tough though since I don't recall much.

There is a castle or manor house on cliff. Under the edge of a cliff is a cave/tomb with some sort of ghoul (female I think) or something that calls people down to it.

Particularly memorable for some reason is the way the path along the cliff face is sort of hidden unless you know to look for it, so it is kind of secret.

I was maybe 3 or 4 when I saw it so I may be off on details.

Any ideas?

"Night of the Demon" (1957)

Is this one of the best horror movies of the 'fifties? Released in the States as "Curse of the Demon", the slightly longer British cut is the better of the two. Psychologist Dr. John Holden (Dana Andrews) is slowly but surely persuaded of the reality and power of the occult. Director Jacques Tourneur ("Cat People") uses suspense, the occult, freak weather, eerie night-time scenes, and subtle suggestion to great effect. The film’s strange and terrible deaths nearly always follow the passing of a piece of runic script to an unsuspecting victim.

Dr. Holden comes to England to investigate the mysterious death of his colleague, Professor Harrington. (The Professor's cries of "It's in the tree... It’s coming!" are used in Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love' song). Holden remains sceptical, even after Karswell apparently conjures up a storm on a fine day! But he soon realises that he himself is being targeted by the occultist. Joan Harrington, the late Professor's daughter, perkily played by Peggy Cummins, provides the film’s romance. Top of the performance bill must go to the Crowley-like Dr. Julian Karswell (Niall MacGinnis) who shows that even the Magister must pay the ultimate price for his craft. The demon effects are fairly tame compared to today's technology, but you'll never willingly accept a weird little slip of paper from anyone again!

Okay, people go to Mars. Find an old ship.

In it they find woman with greenish skin, no clothes on.

Later, on the ship she starts seducing the men at night and sucking their blood out.

I believe her eyes glowed or something like that.

Later, the woman on the ship kill her but when they get to earth they find the ship has eggs layed all through it.

Was this "Queen of Blood" or some other film?

I saw it when I was very young.

I've read Skal's The Monster Show and Humphries' The American Horror Film: An Introduction. I'm also starting one called Ghouls, Gimmicks, and Gold: Horror Films and the American Movie Business, 1953-1968.

Eveer since I asked my TIVO to record anythign with the word "Dracula" in the title, I've been, oh, so happy.
It picked up one of my favorite Hammer Dracs, "Scars of Dracula" and the not great, but underrated John Badham/Frank Langella "Dracula".
What are your favorite bampire movies?
For me it's, Dracula (1931) for Lugosi's masterful performance, the Spanish version of the same time for it's brilliant filmmaking, Hammer's "Horror..." and "Scars of..." (and I have an admitted fondness for the camp of 'Dracula A.D. 1972").
Once you move away from the noble Count, I love "Vampire Circus", Jean Rollin's "Requiem For the Vampire", "Fright Night", "Near Dark", "Blade II", and both Nosferatus.

I also like the 'Blind Dead' series, 'The Flesh Eaters', 'The Werewolf' (1957), and 'The Lodger'. They might not be A-List, but they're pretty good in their own right.

Classics for Sale: The Terror, Satan Rights of Dracula

I found these for sale recently. Previously I had seen them for $25 a pop online.

The Terror is one of the earliest Jack Nicholson films, about a castle hunted by a beautiful ghost that he falls in love with that seems to be trying to get the old man (boris karloff) that lives there killed. Not the best summary, but you get the idea. It is a real classic.

Satan Rights of Dracula is a classic with Cristopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Nothing more need be said when these two are in the same film.

Anyway, I can get more of these for about $10 a piece if anyone else is interested.
Cat and the Canary

I need to see Leni's 1927 Cat and the Canary!! Help me please [she whines]. Anyone have any leads on a video or dvd copy?

I've been haunted by an image in my scapbook of the 'Cat' with his outstretched hand and googlie eye for far too long. I am not so pathetically eager to get my hands on the Bob Hope version but wouldn't mind a triple feature overdose of the films. The third of course being the british flick with a really sexy young Edward Fox.

Greetings all-
Please allow me to introduce myself
My name is Mars.
I'm a career Horror junkie. I love genre films with the same passion I have had for music over the last 20 years, And I am virtually un-repentant about it.

I have the greatest memories of staying up late to watch the classic Universal horror films as a child. It was such an influence on me, and a love I have carried into my adult life.

At the risk of being labeled a "Spam" monger, I would like to invite you all to check out my website:

http://www.deadhousemusic.com

As there is a 14 mb clip of the brilliant F.W. Mernau film "NOSFERATU" that I have posted with some new music that I have written for it.

I hope you will enjoy, and I would certainly apreciate any feedback on the site in general. And how it could be improved.

Yours-

"Carnival of Souls" has a great one, of course, but here are some others that I like: "The Terror"(not such a great movie, but the music is top-notch!), "Dr. Terror's House of Horrors", and "The Gorgon".

Hey People-

My name is Maya and I'm very interested in finding home haunters; people who are insane and make stuff each year for halloween and then decorate their house and invite people over and have kick-ass parties. The reason I'm posting in this particular tribe, is because as a home haunter, I was very inspired by classic horror. It has played a major part in my home haunts each year.

As part of my 8th annual haunt, this upcoming Halloween I'm looking to find as many home/yard haunters/horror inspired createurs as possible, preferably in California, to get together and make a lot of great stuff and have a huge haunt. If anyone is interested, I invite you all to check out the Halloween Home Haunters Society at, HomeHaunters.tribe.net

Thanks for reading!
Carnival of Souls

Good evening one and all,

I finally finished watching Carnival of Souls. My first attempt was about three years ago. I put the vid in and for one reason or another didn't get past her lonely drive to Utah where she starts seeing The Face.

A couple of things struck me, mind you my mind is rather shallow water (no pun intended) when i watch a movie at midnight:

1) It's nice to be able to make your own creepy music sountrack for the movie you are a victim in.

2) Would our lazy-eyes heroine have warbled out of sight to the land of the dead if the crash vehicle had not been found. Or would she have lasted as long as she did if she had stayed in her home town?

and i soo hated that prick neighbor of hers. His deadbeat visage was throttled mightily with popcorn.

Deepest sympathies and have pleasant dreams,
iris

Egyptian Curses, sacrifices and mummies

I thought i'd start a thread for curses a la Kelly's vampires.

Especially since i finally saw The Ghoul.

I was not expecting it to be about an Egyptian pagan eccentric . It was well written and i found myself laughing out of amusement here and there, and really getting into Thesiger's closet christian servant of Karloff's character. Another treat is hearing the proper way to discipline someone who doesn't make coffee properly:

Strip them to the waist and lash them miles across the Saharrah till they are left there to be eaten by locusts.

I must threaten the folks at work with this if they use de-caf one more time.

It was also cool seeing the tables turned between Karloff and Thesiger. This time Karloff is master (but he still chokes the ol' doc to death anyway with a grunt).

As for other movies...I'm torn between Hammer's The Mummy and Universals The Mummy. And love Blood Feast. Haha. Yah it counts.

Anyone have a curses list? I want to see more movies.
Have a good Monday,
iris
