It's an old black & white movie about these huge black rocks that are infecting people in this town & spreading more big black rocks... and the only thing that stops them is salt (or salt water). I saw it about a million years ago & I thought it was called Monolith, or Monoliths (but the only thing I find is an 80s Bill Paxton movie).

It was more serious and a little less cheesy than most 50's Sci Fi, with an interesting variation on the usual alien invasion. -
